Atlanta Braves infielder Whit Merrifield drew attention this week after being struck in the head by a pitch from Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Criswell. Merrifield was removed from the game and tested for a concussion, which he thankfully avoided.
Following the incident, Merrifield expressed his concerns about the current state of MLB pitching, specifically criticizing the emphasis on velocity, which he believes compromises pitchers’ control.
“Where the game’s at right now, it’s just ridiculous,” Merrifield said. “I hate where the game’s at right now with that.”
Merrifield continued by emphasizing the danger he felt, stating that his “life was on the line” and highlighting the number of Braves hitters who have been injured this season due to hit-by-pitches.
“We lost Riley, we almost lost Mike, we almost lost d’Arnaud in a span of two or three weeks,” Merrifield said. “The way pitchers are throwing now, there’s no regard for throwing up and in. Guys are throwing as hard as they can, and they don’t care where the ball goes. It’s just … it’s bulls.
Merrifield makes a valid point, noting that pitchers have sacrificed control in favor of velocity. While pitchers can’t be entirely blamed, as this trend starts in their developmental stages, they are taught early on that speed is key, often pushing velocity at the expense of control.
Merrifield is currently listed as day-to-day according to the Braves’ training staff. However, updates from the team’s official website suggest the situation might be more complicated.
“He passed concussion tests but was still feeling groggy when he arrived at Truist Park on Wednesday afternoon. He is also experiencing discomfort when wearing a hat. Braves manager Brian Snitker said Merrifield is day-to-day.”
MLB teams were reminded last season about the seriousness of concussions when Anthony Rizzo was placed on the injured list two months after sustaining a head injury against the San Diego Padres. Initially, the Yankees attributed Rizzo’s issues to a stiff neck, but he was later shut down for the season after experiencing significant struggles at the plate.
In contrast to the Yankees’ handling of Rizzo, the Braves should exercise caution with Merrifield, especially since he’s still experiencing symptoms.
