The Cleveland Guardians designated veteran pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment earlier this week to free up a roster spot, unable to guarantee him a role on the team. However, on Friday, it was announced that Carrasco would stay with the organization, accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus to provide depth.
The team’s official minor league account, Guards Insider, confirmed the move on X, stating, “RHP Carlos Carrasco cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to @CLBClippers. He is slated to start Saturday night for the Clips.”
Carrasco, aware of how quickly pitching depth can diminish in the majors, could find himself making critical starts for the Guardians as they head toward the playoffs. Though he recently recovered from a right hip strain in August, his 2024 season has been rough. He holds a 3-10 record with a 5.64 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, and 89 strikeouts in 103.2 innings.

While he’s had productive stretches when healthy, it will be challenging for Carrasco to rejoin the Guardians’ major league roster unless injuries occur. The team boasts one of the deepest bullpens in baseball, and their rotation is full, with Alex Cobb set to return from the injured list soon.
Still, Carrasco will stay prepared, aiming to get into top form in case the Guardians need him as they push for a division title and a first-round playoff bye.
