The Florida Gators have suffered an unexpected setback as top running back Montrell Johnson Jr. is temporarily sidelined with a knee injury. Johnson, a crucial member of the Gators’ offence, just underwent a minor arthroscopic procedure, therefore his status is labelled as “week-to-week” by the coaching staff.

Johnson’s contribution to the team cannot be emphasised. The senior back has over 2,500 career running yards and has led the Gators in rushing for the past two seasons, reaching 800 yards in each. His performances earned him second-team All-SEC honours at this year’s media days, demonstrating his value to the squad.
As the season opener versus Miami approaches on August 31st, the Gators may need to change their game plan.
Treyaun Webb, a sophomore, is expected to take over as starter in Johnson’s absence. Webb showed potential last season, gaining 163 running yards on 26 tries and two touchdowns while also exhibiting versatility with four receptions totalling 18 yards.
The Florida Gators have RB Montrell Johnson now listed as “week-to-week”.

During spring camp, Webb expressed his readiness for increased responsibility, stating, “It’s a big opportunity, I plan on taking full advantage of it.” This attitude bodes well for the Gators as they navigate this unexpected challenge.
The running back depth chart also includes freshmen Kahnen Daniels and Jadan Baugh, who have both received praise from running backs coach Jabbar Juluke for their potential and unique skill sets. Additionally, veteran Cam Carroll, returning from an ACL injury, could provide experienced depth if he fully recovers.
While Johnson’s absence is a concern, his injury is not considered season-ending. There is optimism that he may return for the season opener or shortly thereafter. In the meantime, this situation presents an opportunity for the younger backs to prove themselves and potentially add new dimensions to the Gators’ offense.
